About Us

Welcome to the Watling View School website. We’re a county school for children and young people aged from 2 to 19 with either severe, or profound and multiple learning disabilities. We’re located on the southern side of central St Albans, and offer our students a safe, dynamic and highly individualised education appropriate to each person’s level of ability.

We have up to 90 pupils on roll at our school. We have 15 teachers, and 40 teaching assistants and specific skills providers to support learning. On this website you will be able to learn a little bit about our vision and ethos, and in particular our desire to support each child to be the best they can, and to prepare them for life beyond school.
We believe we provide a broad and balanced curriculum which:

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and physical development of pupils at the school and in society
  • prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life
  • develops learners to achieve their best
  • teaches pupils to have choice and control over their lives
  • gives pupils opportunities to develop their communicate skills and
  • enables pupils to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them to contribute effectively within the home, school and wider community

We work closely with the parents of our young people to ensure consistency of approach. Indeed parents are warmly encouraged to participate in the life of the school, either as parent governors, or by participating in the Friends and Parents of Watling View association, which has raised thousands of pounds for the school over the years.

We hope you find this website to be a useful resource, whether you’re a professional looking for advice on special needs, a parent or carer looking for the right school for a child or young person, or whether you’re simply interested in our school. We always welcome visitors. If you cannot find what you need please contact us – we’ll be glad to help.

Best wishes

Informal visits

We are always delighted to show parents around the school and give explanations about our philosophy, principles and practice – and about special education in general - if so requested.

We always invite parents to see the school as soon as possible after receiving a request to consider them for admission. In many cases parents are invited to make an informal visit to the school during the initial assessment period in order to help them to make an informed decision about schooling for their child.

Parents should note that an invitation to visit does not constitute an offer of a place, nor does it indicate that the final outcome of an assessment will be a recommendation that your child comes to a school like Watling View. All such decisions remain the responsibility of the County Council's Special Educational Needs Provision department.
